Ann Palmer

July 12, 1945 — March 16, 2022

Ann S. Palmer, 76, of New Kensington passed away peacefully on March 16,2022 at Concordia in Cabot, surrounded by her loved ones, due to complications from a stroke. Ann was born July 12, 1945 to the late Harold and Malvene Palmer. Ann was a devoted daughter, a generous and loving sister to Jane Harshberger, with whom she resided, and a proud aunt to Debra and Tim Hines. Ann was also an attentive owner to her puppy Gracie. A 1963 graduate of Ken High, Ann continued her education at Mount Union College in Ohio and at the University of Pittsburgh. She was a member of Springdale Presbyterian Church and attended bible studies at Abundant Life Fellowship in Christ Church. Ann lived in the New Kensington area most of her life and was active in her community where she served as president of the Junior Women’s Club, president of the Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers’ Honorary Sorority, and belonged to P.E.O.-Chapter R- for the advancement of women, and PSAR-Pennsylvania State Association of Retirees. Ann’s proudest achievement was the time spent as an elementary teacher and head teacher in the New Kensington-Arnold School District and in the Burrell School District as an elementary school principal at Stewart Elementary. While teaching at Martin Elementary School in New Kensington-Arnold, Ann was recognized and honored as one of the top ten teachers in Pennsylvania. Ann’s innovations, creativity, love, and concern for children continued into her retirement when she and her late friend, Ruth Carson, founded Project SEED, a program that provides food for the weekend to underprivileged children in the New Kensington-Arnold elementary schools. Post- retirement, Ann also enjoyed working as a hostess at Bob Evans restaurants in Harmarville and Monroeville, as well as exercising at Alexander’s Gym, attending cultural events at the Benedum Center, and traveling. Ann was a selfless and generous individual to her family, friends, and fellow workers. She often invited many to lunch or dinner at her favorite restaurant in Oakmont-Hoffstot’s. Likewise, Ann planned trips to The Greenbriar, a resort in West Virginia, for her family and friends. Her love of reading also inspired many to enjoy books she purchased for them. Ann’s desire for those she loved was to involve them in all the experiences that she herself enjoyed in life. Her positive and sunny disposition will be greatly missed by those who were blessed and privileged to have known her. Family and friends will be welcomed from 3-7 p.m. on Monday, March 21, 2022 at R.J. Slater IV Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1000 Freeport Road, New Kensington, Pa. 15068. 724-335-0100. A celebration of life service will take place at the funeral home at 7:00 p.m. The family would appreciate if those attending the viewing would wear a mask. A private interment will be at Verona Cemetery. Memorial donations in Ann’s name can be made to: Project SEED, Alle-Kiski Sr. Citizen’s Center, 1039 Third Ave., New Kensington, Pa, 15068. www.rjslater.com
