Betty Vaughan, 64, of New Kensington, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Pittsburgh on August 25, 1959, to Betty and the late Frederick Cook. Betty was the cherished wife of Dan for 35 wonderful years and the devoted mother of Ian Vaughan and Kelli (TY Jr) Matthews. She was a doting grandmother to Sloane, Layla, and Bryson Matthews.
In addition to her immediate family, Betty will be fondly remembered by her sister Karen (Fred) Molk and nephew Zachary. She was preceded in death by her father and her siblings Wendy and Freddie.
Betty's journey began at Baldwin High School, where she graduated in 1977. Her excellence in basketball earned her induction into the Hall of Fame. She continued her academic and athletic pursuits at West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she earned a scholarship and graduated in 1981. Betty's accomplishments in basketball, tennis, and track led to her induction into the college's Hall of Fame.
After her education, Betty pursued a career in teaching and coaching, touching the lives of countless students and players. Affectionately known as "Coach Vaughan," she taught not only athletic skills but also life lessons, always treating her students and players with respect and earning their love in return.
Above all, Betty treasured her family, especially her grandchildren, who were her greatest source of pride and joy.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday from 2 PM until the time of services at 6 PM at RJ Slater IV Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 1000 Freeport Rd, New Kensington.
