DANIEL L. WASSEL (1965 – 2023)
Beloved son, father, grandfather, partner and brother, Daniel L. Wassel, age 57, died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest on 11 January. Daniel was born on 15 February, 1965 in San Diego California to Andrea (Gooch) and Andrew “Mitch” Wassel.
An avid fan of the Pirates during their World Series years, his favorite player was Willie “Pops” Stargell and he sought to emulate them by playing many seasons of Little League Baseball. He also loved bowling and was a member of the “Strikers” team at Hillcrest Lanes in Lower Burrell. This was, of course, all eventually eclipsed by a lasting devotion to Steelers football.
He graduated from Burrell Senior High School, with the class of 1983, where he was a member of the Wrestling Squad and began his life-long love of cooking by enrolling in as many Home Economics classes as possible.
After graduation, Daniel attended Penn State, New Kensington Campus for a short period where he discovered his love of Dystopian Fiction and the writings of Hunter S. Thompson, Jr.
Subsequently, he received a Certificate in Information Technology from the Allegheny County Community College, Boyce Campus. Upon Completion, he parlayed this into a position with Mellon Bank in that department, where he continually grew his proficiency in the field until retiring in 2021 after more than 30 years of service.
During this time, Daniel consistently worked side jobs, one or two at a time, at various Pizza Parlors and as a bar tender at the Freedom Inn.
He was predeceased by his father, “Mitch” Wassel, and is survived by his mother, Andrea (Fred) Norrick of Lower Burrell; his son, Tyler Andrew Wassel (Sandy) and two beloved grandsons, Chase Carter Wassel and Ezra Daniel Wassel & granddaughter Danaye Martin, all of Butler; his partner of 15 years, Dana Rowles of Arnold; his brother David Wassel of White Oak; and his four cats, all of whom love and will miss him very much.
Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Monday at RJ SLATER IV FUNERAL HOME & Cremation Service 1000 Freeport Rd., New Kensington. A blessing service will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park Lower Burrell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Animal Protectors of the Allegheny Valley in New Kensington. www.rjslater.com
