Fred E. Matthews, 79, of New Kensington passed on July 4, 2021
He was born on Oct. 1, 1941, in New Kensington to the late Fred H. B. Matthews and Louise D. Matthews. Fred was surrounded at his death by his brother, Terry (Susan), Matthews, his wife, Jan, daughters Donna and Sharon and his niece, Kandis Bingham of Texas. Fred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jan, their children, Aaron, Donna (James) Cribbs, and Sharon (Robert) Coutch. He also leaves behind his grandchildren that he loved more than life, Samatha Coutch, Robert, Coutch, Michael Coutch, Dylan Cribbs, and his furry boy, Blu. Fred is survived by three brothers and a sister. He was preceded in death by his grandson Noah Coutch.
Fred grew up in the New Kensington area and was a graduate of Ken High, class of 1959. He is the oldest of five children. Fred joined the Navy at the age of 18 and completed Corps school in San Diego. It was there that he met his wife, Jan; they were married in 1960. Fred served in Vietnam with MAG-11, 1st MAW. He is a recipient of the Purple Heart, along with many other distinguished awards and medals.
Fred was an avid Ham Radio operator, a member of the NRA, and a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Lower Burrell, where he served as the Financial Secetary for 19 years. Fred loved the game of golf, a good joke, and spending time with both his church and family. To many, Fred was a "gruff old man," but to those who knew him, he was funny, caring, supportive, and very generous. He loved sharing his passion for the ham radio world with his son-in-law Rob and spent many hours at the shooting range with his oldest daughter, Donna.
Fred attended every activity his grandchildren were in and always encouraged them to spread their wings. Fred will be interned in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in a small private ceremony.
