Mike Sopko Jr., 95, of New Kensington, passed away on July 8, 2021. Mike was born in New Kensington on March 13, 1926, to the late Michael and Mary (Petras) Sopko. As a young boy, he worked as a huckster of fruits and vegetables to help his family and then enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 18. A Veteran of WWII, Mike served 21 ½ years sailing around the world, achieving the rank of Chief Gunner’s Mate. He returned home to run the family bar in Arnold, PA.
Mike was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt with his beagles. He treasured the time he spent fishing with his son in Key West and, with his grandson on Lake Pymatuning, fishing for walleye. He was a member of the VFW Post 92, the American Legion Post 868, Puckata Beagle’s Club, and the 7th Street Sportsman Club.
Mike is survived by his son Rich (Linda) Sopko of Lower Burrell and his grandchildren Kelci and Lewis Sopko. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Julia Sopko, and his siblings John Sopko, Ann Wisniewski, and Irene Martinka.
Family and friends welcome Friday, July 16, 2021, from 10 am until the time of the service at 12 Noon at RJ Slater IV Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1000 Freeport Rd., New Kensington. Mike will be laid to rest next to his wife at Union Cemetery.
