Whoever said nice guys finish last never met Raymond Albert Duke Jr., who died June 18, 2024, just a week shy of his 95th birthday. He was steadfast, hard-working and quiet, except when watching Steelers games.
He was born June 26, 1929, in Homestead, Pa., the son of the late Raymond A. Duke Sr. and Gertrude (Whittington) Duke.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean war. He retired from Westinghouse as an electrical technician, and could fix anything. He spent countless hours keeping a series of clunkers on the road so he could spend even more time driving his kids to and from school, church, sports, Scouting and Indian Princess events. He belonged to bowling and golfing leagues and loved to fish.
Born the year the Great Depression started, he was happy to be able to support his wife and children, buy a house in suburban Pittsburgh, and live his golden years surrounded by loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Adrienne “Dolly” Duke, as well as his older brothers, John W. "Jack" Duke and Russell Duke.
He is survived by his children, Daniel R. Duke, Douglas (Karen) Duke, Raymond A. Duke, and Marianne (Ken) Workman. He was grandfather to Daniel and Mason Duke; Ryan Duke and Leah (Matt) Newcomer; and Matt, Adrianna, Sydney and Nicholas Workman; and great-grandfather to Audrina Duke, and Taylor and Aubrey Newcomer. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
