Reid Stewart

January 21, 1931 — July 3, 2023

Reverend Reid Winfield Stewart PhD died peacefully on July 3, 2023 at the age of 92. He was born Jan 21, 1931 the only child of Winfield and Margaret Stewart of Lower Burrell, PA and returned in retirement to live on the site of the family farm.

He was a beloved Presbyterian minister at churches in Lisbon, NY; and throughout western PA preaching in Indiana, Brownsville, New Kensington, Latrobe, Dormont, Parnassus, Tarentum, and Irwin, and other nearby churches for over forty years. During the time he lived in Edinburgh, Scotland he assisted congregations in the Church of Scotland. He performed many baptisms, weddings and funerals and he especially enjoyed visits with his congregants. He was a well-known local historian. He wrote books chronicling PA church history and genealogy. He enjoyed research, and helping others learn about their history. He set up reunions for extended family members. Reid was involved in the SAR, the Western Pennsylvania Historical Society, Presbyterian Historical Society of the Upper Ohio Valley, The Pennsylvania Genealogical Society and received a history award from the DAR in 2022. He enjoyed travel, hiking, and led tours through Europe. He was an avid gardener, fascinated by nature, collected antiques and read everything. He retained his curiosity and interests until the end.

He attended Stewart School, Arnold High School, Westminster College, Case Western Institute of Technology with degrees in Chemistry, Pittsburgh Reformed Presbyterian Seminary, and New College in Edinburgh Scotland studying Scottish Church History. He worked briefly for Alcoa before entering the ministry.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Stewart, daughter Margaret Pfeiffer, her spouse Karl and grandsons Joseph and Matthew of Anchorage, Alaska. He had a full life and will be missed. A memorial service will be at Puckety Presbyterian Church on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at 11am. Interment will be at Plum Creek Cemetery.
