Sylvia Jean Lewis, 73, of Arnold, PA, died on Saturday, January 27, 2024 after a short illness. She was born on November 23, 1950 in New Kensington, PA.
A 1968 graduate of Valley High School, New Kensington, she received an Associate’s degree from Duff’s Business Institute.
She attended Bethel African American Methodist Episcopal Church, Tarentum, PA.
Sylvia worked at two major law firms in downtown Pittsburgh. She was a legal secretary at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney and then worked for Morgan Lewis for 20+ years as a legal secretary before retiring in 2019. Sylvia loved reading a diverse collection of books and enjoyed playing cards and board games with family and friends. Most importantly, spending time with family was the utmost important aspect of her life.
Survivors include her daughter, Leslie Nicole Lewis of Owings Mills, MD, a son, Alexander James Lewis of Arnold, her mother, Ruby Jean Ellis Hughley of New Kensington, two brothers, Coleman Hughley of Las Vegas, NV and Edward (Crystal) Hughley, Jr. of Penn Hills and one sister, Diane Hughley of New Kensington. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Santana Alexandra Lewis of Washington, DC and Xalie Alexandra London Butler of Owings Mills, MD. Additional survivors include five nieces: Tyra Hughley Smith of Los Angeles, CA; Whitney Hughley of Las Vegas, NV; Shannon Hughley of Monroeville, PA; Tiffany Hughley Odom of Murrysville, PA; and Camille Posey of Rankin, PA; one nephew, Jonathan Hughley of Brookfield, IL, one great-niece and four great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Hughley, Sr. and sister, Valerie Lee Hughley. Also preceding Sylvia in death were her paternal grandparents, Otto and Rosa Lee Hubbard Hughley, maternal grandparents, Paschal and Nishie Lewis Ellis and sister-in-law, Danna Hughley.
Cremation arrangements are entrusted to RJ Slater IV Funeral Home & Cremation Service, www.rjslater.com. Per Sylvia’s request, there will be no public visitation. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, February 3 at 12:00 pm at Bibleway Christian Fellowship Church, 504 8th Street, New Kensington. Officiating the service will be Rev. Dr. Mitchel Nickols of Bibleway and Rev. Linda Moore of Bethel AME. Family and friends are welcome to join the Lewis/Hughley Family at the memorial repass at 1:30 pm at MJ’s, 1735 Fourth Avenue, Arnold, PA to honor, celebrate and reminisce about Sylvia.
